Las Vegas, NV - September 14, 2023 - Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez retained his four belts by unanimous decision over Jaime Munguia Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Alvarez, who entered the ring with a record of 58-2-2 and 39 KOs, controlled the fight from the opening bell. He used his superior boxing skills to outland Munguia, who had a record of 40-1-0 and 32 KOs entering the fight. Munguia had his moments in the fight, but he was never able to seriously trouble Alvarez. The Mexican challenger landed some clean shots in the early rounds, but Alvarez weathered the storm and began to take control of the fight in the middle rounds. Alvarez dropped Munguia with a left hook in the 10th round, but the challenger was able to get back to his feet and finish the fight. In the co-main event, light heavyweight contender Michael Hunter Jr. defeated former world champion Steve Cunningham by unanimous decision. Hunter, who entered the ring with a record of 20-1-1 and 15 KOs, controlled the fight from the opening bell. He used his superior size and power to outmuscle Cunningham, who had a record of 31-10-1 and 14 KOs entering the fight. Hunter dropped Cunningham with a left hook in the fifth round, but the veteran was able to get back to his feet and finish the fight. The victory was a big one for Hunter, who is now in line for a title shot. In the opening bout of the PPV portion of the card, welterweight prospect Vergil Ortiz Jr. defeated former world champion Maurice Hooker by unanimous decision. Ortiz, who entered the ring with a record of 19-0 and 19 KOs, dominated the fight from the opening bell. He used his superior speed and power to outclass Hooker, who had a record of 27-3-3 and 18 KOs entering the fight. Ortiz dropped Hooker with a left hook in the second round, and the referee stopped the fight in the seventh round after Ortiz landed a barrage of punches. The victory was a big one for Ortiz, who is now considered to be one of the top prospects in the welterweight division.
